Living By The Moon

Living By The Moon Image
The recurring cycle of the phases of the Moon has been observed and honored by mankind since our earliest ancestors first turned their eyes upward towards the night sky in wonder. The unending cycle of the Moon is one of the most fundamental and readily observable rhythms of the natural world. And in every phase, every moment, our lives are influenced by the great lady of the heavens. We flow with the currents of the Moon whether we are conscious of them or not, and we can either choose to ignore Her influences, or we can make a conscious choice to incorporate the rhythms of our lives with the rhythms of the Moon. Remember! There is nothing in this Universe that is not in some way connected.

Our Moon wisdom will grow through our commitment to experiencing and understanding the energies of the great lady. And, as with all relationships in our lives, our connection to the Moon will be a deeply personal and endlessly growing interaction. Watch the comings and goings of the Moon just as those who came before us have always done. Begin by taking the time to notice what phase the Moon is in and where She is in the sky at the time you have chosen to greet Her. You will find that over time you will begin to tune to Her changing rhythms, and as you continue observe and to honor Her cycles, you will find yourself aligning more closely to the lunar energies.

So, starting now, take time some time out of your busy day to greet Her. Look up into the sky and find Her face in the Heavens above. Remember, some days you will need to seek Her out during the light of day. Then, open your arms and your heart to Her and greet Her as you would greet a dear friend. Allow yourself to stir with connection to Her light and beauty. Speak words of greeting and gratitude to the lovely lady who guides us.

To Make a Wish Come True

Draw the sign of the waxing Moon with a thorn onto a short, fat beeswax candle (a white votive candle is perfect.) Light the candle, gaze into the flame, and concentrate on your wish as you chant:

"GRACIOUS LADY MOON"
"EVER IN MY SIGHT,"
"KINDLY GRANT THE BOON"
"I ASK OF THEE TONIGHT."

"BLOW OUT THE FLAME, BUT HOLD ITS LIGHT IN YOUR MIND FOR AS LONG AS YOU CAN. AN ANSWER WILL BE REVEALED TO YOU."

New Moon New Beginnings

New Moon New Beginnings Image
The period of the New Moon is a good time to start new activities and to take action toward new ambitions, purposes, and directions. This is the time to plant, so that we may grow or create the pathway of your inner journey. Look deeply into your inner self, and by consciously moving your being into an alignment with the New and Full Moon cycle, you will find a potential to utilize the inner channels within your being. The challenge which confronts us at the New Moon cycle is one of self-expression through activity...primarily as one of us projecting ourselves out into the environment, society. This can include learning about what we hope to have manifested in our lives, the vision which we will choose to pursue, taking decisions to change unsatiisfactory areas of our lives, and making new beginnings. The New Moon is a phase of renewal, and it is this energy that we can harness to aid our attempts to change.

I can never say this enough. Journaling is so important. I have journalled since I was a teenager. There is never a need to show it to anyone else, but by writing down your thoughts and then rereading them later, you will be able see the patterns of your soul. You'll see more clearly what you have learned about yourself, your feelings, your emotions, how you handle things--and you will likely also see what you have NOT learned yet. The things that cause us pain are often found to involve similar patterns of behavior, similar mistakes. In the process of thinkng these things through, you may also discover a path toward healing. Just the other day,I was cleaning out a closet and found one of my old, old journals from 20 years ago. Gosh, how co-dependent I was at the time! I was so insecure, so beaten from bad relationships. And by reading my words of so long ago, I was able to see just how far I have come. We are all here to learn, on a deep soul level, the path to serenity.

Don't waste too much time on these questions. I have found that when you take your time, you try to write everything out perfect...and although your grammar may be beyond fault, your inner self remains hidden. Just jot down what comes to your mind...words, phrases...sentences about how you relate to this phase of the moon.

"WHAT IS YOUR INNER SELF'S NEW BEGINNING?"

"WHAT SEEDS MIGHT YOU PLANT IN YOUR INNER SELF SO THAT YOU CAN GROW, TRANSFORM, OR CREATE YOURSELF ANEW?"

"HOW MIGHT YOU NOURISH YOUR NEW BEGINNING?"

The Wheel Of The Year

The Wheel Of The Year Cover
NE – It is the time of the Spring Equinox. Day and night are of equal length. Our energy begins to build as we begin to come out of the contemplative time of winter.

EAST – As spring swings into full bloom you feel full of energy and promise. It is easy to create wonderful plans for the future at this time of year.

SE – It is the time of the Summer Solstice. The days are long and nights are short. We enjoy the outdoors feeling alive, active and whole. Nature blesses us with her radiance.

SOUTH – In mid summer we are more active because of the wonderful outdoor activities available to us. Our gardens are bursting with the earth's bounty.

SW – It is the time of the Autumn Equinox. Night and day are of equal length creating a balance point between our active life of summer and our quieter more inward time of winter.

WEST – As days get shorter and nights longer, we begin to retreat more into the darkness for introspection. We think about what is and is not working in our lives.

NW – The Winter Solstice comes. Nights are very long and we find ourselves to be more receptive to dreams and intuition. We spend more time indoors, our winter cave of the dreamtime.

NORTH – We find that we sleep longer at night. The quiet evenings offer rest as well. We may even feel a bit depressed, our body's way of telling us to take inward time for ourselves.

Spiral Wreath

Spiral Wreath Image
You will need grapevine (from craft store or the wild), spring flowers (From a florist or the wild), copper wire to hold vine or flowers in place, heavy objects, like bricks.

Soak the grapevine in water overnight. Shape into a spiral and, using the heavy objects to hold it in place, allow to dry for twenty-four hours. Weave the flowers, symbolic of returning warmth, into the grapevine.

An Opening Blessing

An Opening Blessing Cover
A Native American tradition called for blessing a gathering by invoking the powers of the six directions. This morning, we will repeat this brief invocation with the help of the traditional Indian smudge sticks.

(Lights the sticks, extinguishes the flames, and uses the sticks to brush smoke in the directions indicated.)

(Below) We call on the power of Mother Earth, the Great Turtle, strong support for all humankind, bring to us patience and the ability to take one step at a time. Powers of the Earth, be with us!

(South) Powers of the South, Sacred Mouse, teacher of Trust and Innocence. Let us find again our innocent eyes, our playful trust in each other and in other humans. Powers of the South, the Mouse, be with us!

(West) Powers of the West, place of Intuition and of the power of woman, Great Bear, bringer of dreams. Teach us the ability to go inside ourselves and discover the truth within. Powers of the West, Great Bear, be with us!

(North) Powers of the North, home of the Great Buffalo, spirit of wisdom and knowledge. Bring us the wisdom to share with each other and to provide for one another. Powers of the North, Buffalo, be with us!

(East) Powers of the East, come, source of light and illumination, Eagle, creature of great heights. Give us the gift of sight, that we may see clearly the path ahead. Powers of the East, Eagle, be with us!

(Above) Powers of the Sky, Great Spirit, come, bring all healing and infinite guidance. Sun that shines bright upon all our days. Powers of Earth, of south, west, north, and east, be with us as the sun in the sky!

(Turns to the audience.) The traditional blessing of power came through the scenting of others with the smoke from smudge sticks like these, composed of sage, cedar or other substances. As I have ceremonially blessed this service, now let each of you do the same to the other.

(Each person uses the smudge stick on one other person.)

(From the American Indian Tradition)

Phases Of The Moon

Phases Of The Moon Image
Do you believe in 'Moon Madness'? Luna...Lunatic...Both words are derived from the Latin word "lunar". Our ancestors certainly believed that there was some kind of connection between the Moon and human emotions and madness. We find legends surrounding the Moon and how it causes poeple to become unhinged in almost every culture in the world. And according to this folklore, all kinds of 'crazy' things are said to happen during the period of the 'full moon'. such as the werewolf myth which dates back to the ancient days in Rome.

We all know, and I am sure that we all agree, that higher tides occur at the new and full moons because the moon's gravitational pull is stronger at those times. But, does how does this relate to the assumption that it is possible for the pull of the moon to somehow influence our souls in a totally negative way? Science tells us that the human body made up of the same percentage of water that is found here on the earth? With this in mind, isn't there reason to believe that these same tidal forces just 'might' affect us as well.

Statistics have shown that men actually DO become more violent during the full moon. Furthermore, according to some of these studies, the five areas of human aggression and violence--homicide, suicide, aggravated assault, fatal traffic accidents, and psychiatric emergency room visits--all noticeably increased during certain phases of the moon. (Dr. Arnold Leiber, University of Miami, 1974) This was especially true for homicides and assaults which seemed to be significantly clustered around the full moon...And, ironically, in all these cases, it was men who outnumbered women as being affected by the moon's gravitational pull.

Some other interesting facts about the moon are:

"PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY ROOM VISITS CLUSTER DURING THE FIRST QUARTER MOON AND DECREASE AROUND THE NEW OR FULL MOON."

"SUICIDE AND TRAFFIC ACCIENTS WENT UP WITH THE SAME CURVE AS HOMICIDE AND ASSAULT CASES DURING THE NEW MOON."

"BEES ARE MUCH MORE ACTIVE AT THE NEW MOON PHASE...IN KEEPING WITH THEIR FUNCTION AS THE FERTILIZERS OF PLANTS."

"A CERTAIN NEW MOON DURING THE SPRINGTIME TRIGGERS THE HORMONE THYROXIN IN SALMON WHO NEED TO SWIM DOWN RIVER TO THE SEA. THIS IS THE BEST TIME FOR THEM TO MAKE THE JOURNEY UNSEEN BY PREDITORS."

"IN SURGERY, BLEEDING FROM WOUNDS OFTEN INCREASES DURING A FULL MOON"

"MORE BIRTHS OCCUR AT A FULL MOON."

"SEEDS GERMINATE MORE QUICKLY AND EFFECTIVELY WHEN SOWN WITH THE MOON WAXING TO FULL."

"VETERINARY RESEARCHERS AT COLORADO STATE UNIVERSITY FOUND EVIDENCE THAT MORE PETS ARE RUSHED TO EMERGENCY DURING A FULL MOON."

"INSOMNIA AND SLEEP PATTERN DIFFICULTIES AFFECTED WOMEN MORE DURING THE PERIOD OF THE FULL MOON."
