Dark Moon Dead Moon

The Moon continues to grow small, and soon, very soon, it will have waned completely, and we will find that it appears to have vanished completely. This is why it is called the "Dark Moon" or the "Dead Moon". It signifies death, but not literally a physical death, but because it is because this is the last cycle of the Moon, and there will be no Moon for us to see...because the Moon is now conjunct the Sun...rising at sunrise and setting at sunset. To the ancients, this was a symbol of death. Some people just don't even deal with this period of the Dark Moon which lasts for approximately three days...the day before, the day of the "New Moon", and the day after. This is when the power of the Moon is at its weakest. But, I believe this is a very important phase. For many, and this is important for those of us who feel drained, this is a time of rest and introspection where little or no magickal workings are done. This is where we give ourselves a much needed break, to turn to self and to pamper and replenish our energies.

Yet, some traditions hold that the Dark Moon holds the same power as the Full Moon. The Goddess has turned her face away from us, and darkness walks the earth. For those in these traditions, dark energies are conjured during this time; it is a time for black magick and dark working.
