When we're opening up a big topic like "how to become a wizard" (or witch), it leads to a whole host of personal matters. We'll get into the nitty gritty practices and techniques in later articles, but first we'll want to discuss spiritual alchemy. Meaning, the whole-person transformation that is to take place.
You see, we believe that there is a wizard, or a wise witch, within. It is the part of yourself that is ancient, connected to the Universe, your innate higher knowledge. Keep in mind, this earthy, mystical, heart-based knowing does not negate the rational, ordered, intellect. Rather, it supports a more balanced, calm, and useful rational mind.
Really, this journey of personal transformation we're talking about is vast, and ultimately, never-ending. In its broadest sense, you could say that our quest in learning how to become a wizard is to cultivate the highest self.
That would certainly be accurate.
It's just that here, on this site and the type of people it attracts, we are focusing that higher self through a particular lens of human experience. That lens is shaped by the earth-sympathetic traditions that are generally called pagan, wiccan, and the like. But let's not fret too much about labels. They may help some to focus as individuals and collectively form communities, while others may not need or desire those particular labels as much.
When we talk about how to become a wizard, we talk a lot about nature.
"What does it mean to be in balance with nature?"
It's like any good relationship. There is mutual benefit, a flow of giving and receiving in both parties that melts into a feeling of unity and oneness.
You do your part by being centered. The more centered you are, not thrown off by every little passing experience, the more that nature will support you. Think of this: you wouldn't be able to reason with another person raging with anger. They would not hear you, figuratively and maybe even literally.
The same is true of nature.
The spirits of nature speak gently. If your thoughts and emotions are in turmoil, how do you expect to hear the soft whisperings of the wisdom of Life?
Learning how to become a wizard does not mean suppressing or getting rid of emotions. It means managing them well, funneling them to good use, and realizing that often, we can choose emotions.
Radical as that may sound, emotions feel automatic because we have deep habits. Certain experiences trigger certain emotions in most people. Think even of Pavlov's dogs. The wizard cultivates the gap between stimulus and response, and thus comes at a given situation with more grounded energy. We know this may be a challenging concept for some, but please let it sit with you.
To peel back another layer of a witch or wizard's experience of becoming, let's discuss "coincidences."
Part of the magick of life is what most people call coincidences. Isn't it great when you feel life is on your side and confirming things? This is a state of being. When centered, these beautiful coincidences happen a lot more. This is Nature's way of confirming that the centerdness we're discussing is a key component in your discovering how to become a wizard.
A still lake accurately reflects the trees at its edge. Choppy waters do not.
The balance with nature also brings about the balance "within" you. It's the whole-brain melding of intuition and rationale. See and feel them as friends and partners with one another.
The intuition pulls you to travel to Australia, just on a whim. The rational mind plans and executes the travel itinerary. The intuition- pliable, present, and unattached to expectations- remains in tact once you get to Australia. It soothes the rational mind when it says, "why did we come here for seemingly no reason? Are we crazy?" It openly receives the gifts of following that hunch. This is a magickal way of living indeed.
We may be centered in solitude, but interaction brings the coincidences and the interPLAY. So there too is a balance of stillness and action.
Some who walk the path of transformation, seeking the witch's way, learning how to become a wizard, may be drawn to solitude. This is wonderful for meditation, and collecting and focusing your energies. But most often, that time is like tilling the soil. The plants bloom and grow when you engage with the world-helping, healing, playing, laughing, teaching and learning from others. This is where those cosmic coincidences happen. So remember to balance your times of reflection and contemplation with interaction.
As you can see, learning how to become a wizard means learning balance and harmony among all of the aspects of your Self.
Transformation of the world is really the transformation of you.
Personal transformation products abound. Many of them are hokey and lame, as we're sure you know. The New Super Mind from Burt Goldman, "The American Monk" offers real insights and tools, including teachings based on the 7 Ancient Laws of Hermes/Thoth. THOTH IS THE ENERGETIC BEING WHO TAUGHT THE ANCIENT EGYPTIANS THEIR CRAFTS AND POWERS. The packaging of the course is contemporary, the wisdom is eternal.
Our next article discusses the ideas of Magick and Magick Practitioners in more detail.
